What Every Bride Needs to Know: How to Change Your Name

After a bit of confusion with trying to go through the name-changing process, I decided to make a post for other Brides. For Brides who want to take their husband's last name after the wedding, listen up.

First, when you go to the Circuit Court to get your Marriage License, be sure to pay the extra $2.50 fee to have them send you a copy of the license. Second, after the wedding the Marriage License should be mailed back to the Circuit Court to be put on record and they will mail you a copy shortly after. Once you have received the copy, take the Marriage License, your Driver's License, and your new address to a Social Security Office nearest you. No appointment necessary. The process only takes about 10 minutes and they will mail you a new SS card with your new name on it.

Next. Wait 24 hours and go to the DMV. Be sure to have your Driver's License, $10.00, SS papers (even though you won't need these papers for anything it's good to have them just in case), and the Marriage License. I have found that going to the DMV anytime between 4-5pm is the best time to go. The DMV will give you temporary license papers and will mail you a new ID. Be sure to put a little make up on and fix up your hair a little....unlike me. I now have a mug shot for an ID picture. Bummer!

You're all set! Hope this helps you brides who need a little direction in this area like I did!

Note: All information is based in Virginia
